What happens when our voices enter digital systems
and become data? Who governs what that data becomes,
how it is used, and who has the authority to control
it? Our voices can become training data, synthetic
identities, tools for scams, and evidence in
immigration cases, but once a voice is digital, who
has the power to reclaim it?
Passphrase challenges you to give away your voice
(if you dare), and you must beat the system to claim
it back. It asks who is privileged enough to do so,
whether access to ownership is equal, and what the
consequences are when it is not.
Legislation is essential, but it does not guarantee
agency. Passphrase explores the gap between having
rights over our data and understanding what our data
can become or do in systems of power.
